Although I agree recipes appears to reads as you have written, I believe it actually states:

1/2 teaspoon baking soda may be *used* if the milk is soured.

baking soda is typically added to sour milk or buttermilk biscuits

I think it should read…may be USED if the milk is sour.

I believe it says, “1\2 teaspoon baking soda may be used if milk is sour”
