I grew up on this salad dressing, love it. They discontinued this dressing years ago but GIANT Foods made it and i would get it in NJ or MD but they have since discontinued it as well. I just used my last packet and had to come up with a similar version based on ingredients on back of package.so here’s the closest I have come. My daughter also grew up on this stuff she is 16 and she thinks this is pretty good. dry ingred. 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp dry mustard, 1/2 tsp pepper, 1/8 tsp horseradish(I dehydrated some horseradish and ground it, you could proabably leave it out), 1/4 tsp celery seed, 1/8 tsp msg, 1/8 tsp parsley. 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup oil, shake well.
oh, wand i was referring to the old fashion french
Cindy is RIGHT ON TARGET with her recipe! I made this tonight. I omitted MSG (headaches) and increased celery salt to 1/2 tsp – Penzey’s spices has dried horseradish and I had that on hand. I am going to be making batches and sending to my relatives that also loved this stuff. My son is 23 and said that it tasted as he remembered. My mom is diabetic and going to use Splenda to replace the sugar. THANK YOU CINDY!
I have duplicated the Good Seasons Old Fashioned French Dressing and my recipe is the closest I have found to the original.

I have been trying to find Something that tastes like Old Fashion French dressing for years and today I stumbled upon this web site. I sure hope Cindy’s recipe is close because my potato salad has never been right since the package mix was discontinued. So excited!
Looking for Rosemary who posted she had duplicated the Good Seasons Old Fashioned French Dressing recipe. How do I get in touch with her? Thanks.
Yes, Rosemary, please share your recipe! We’d all appreciate it. I can only assume you intended to, otherwise why would one bother to post what you posted?
Here it is 2019 and I am still looking for a recipe and I will be trying this. It will be as close as I will be able to get. We use it to make beef short ribs…they will not be my aunts without it.
I think that Cindy did the best recipe I have found in so many years. I exchanged ‘celery seed’ and salt for ‘celery salt’ as i think the seed is a little more bitter. The horseradish adds a dimension that should be in there… I bought powdered HR for this reason only, but I think you could dry and powder your own, or leave it fresh as an ingredient. But it is subtle, so you could leave it out – but shouldn’t! Also I lowered the sugar (seems to go a little flat with too much sugar, so i halved the sugar from Cindy’s. I did put in the MSG – back in the 60’s and 70’s MSG was in everything commercial, and I think it does add to the flavor.
I don’t have an original package or listing / picture of the original packaging, but this was the only dressing I used, and i grew up on it…nearly 60 years! IF ANYONE CAN SEND ME A PICTURE OF THE ORIGINAL PACKAGE – I’D GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!
So here is my ingredient list for OLD FASHIONED FRENCH from GOOD SEASONS: …10 years later that Cindy’s! … Thanks C
