This recipe was written on a lined index card and found in a large collection, date unknown. I’ve typed it below along with a scanned copy (front side only).

Recipe Card For Date Nut Bars

Melba’s Date Nut Bars
400°

Filling – Cook until thick:

1 1/2 cup sliced dates
2/3 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
2 T lemon juice

1 C brown sugar
3/4 c shortening
1 1/4 c rolled oats
1 1/2 c flour
1/2 t salt

Combine b. sugar, oats, flour, salt. Cut in shortening until coarse crumbs.

Spread half mixture in shallow pan. Cover with filling.

Spread remaining mixture over filling.

Bake 400°
20 – 25 min.

Thank you so much for this recipe!

Since last Christmas, I have misplaced my mother in laws recipe for her date nut bars. She made them every Christmas for 45 years. I took over the job about 8 years ago!
I have searched the web for a similar variety. I think this is it~!

I was at a restaurant in New Hampshire they had a bakery inside of homemade deserts after eating one Went back and bought what they had left. I am so glad you have this recipe I’ve been looking for it a long time.

The recipe card only showed the front side, and that was the only info typed, so the amount of nuts was not included in the recipe!
Could you give the backside ingredients from this card that would complete the recipe please?

My 7th grade Home Ec class made this recipe in 1951 as our first baking project. I would bake the date nut bars over and over. I lost the recipe when I was in college in 1958. I baked the bars today and it taste just like we are back in 1951. Thank you for publishing, December 17, 2020.
