Old Fashioned Raisin Bars
THESE ARE so easily made and taste so good as an accompaniment for Summer fresh fruit salads. I keep them on hand in my freezer for emergencies.
One cup raisins
One cup water
One-half cup butter
One cup sugar
One egg
One and three-fourths cups unsifted all-purpose flour
One tsp. baking soda
One-fourth tsp. salt
One tsp. each: cinnamon and allspice
One-half tsp. cloves
Chopped nuts (optional)
Combine raisins and water; bring to a boil. Remove from heat; add butter; cool to lukewarm. Place in mixing bowl; add sugar, egg and dry ingredients that have been sifted together. With electric mixer, beat until thoroughly blended. Turn into greased and floured jelly roll pan (15½x10½x1-inch) and bake in preheated 350-degree oven about 25 minutes. Cool.
Frost with combination of two tablespoons butter, melted; one teaspoon vanilla, one and three-fourths cup confectioners’ sugar and enough milk for spreading consistency.–Yields about eight dozen.
More Recipes For You To Enjoy:I have made these many times. If you want to have a thicker bar, put the mixture in a 9×12 pan. Kids love these.
I worked at the hospital for a year an a half. The sour cream an radon bars were the best thing in the cafeteria. So good I’m looking for the receipe. It’s been 20 years. I still would like to taste them again
I lost my BC cookbook that had the best oatmeal raisin bars. You baked the base, then put on the raisin layer and last drizzled it with a cinnamon topping. if anyone has this recipe please send it to me.
This recipe is amazing. I was hoping someone posted it online, my copy is at another house and I LOVE these bars. I think the person called them Raisin Velvet Bars when she shared it with me–they have a great texture and are easy to make.
My mom and grandma made these..They made a maple glaze that was amazing..try it for a extra special treat..just replace the vanilla in the frosting with maple flavoring..the best ever!!!
Can’t wait to try these. I was always looking for a good raisin bar recipe.
This is a great recipe. I have been searching for this recipe for years. My sister’s and brothers all loved going into Piggly Wiggly as kids and buying a bar of Old Fashioned Raisin Batd for $1.25 each. Lived in a small town in Tx (Luling Tx) They’re so good I could probably eat the whole pan if I didn’t stop. Thank you for making the recipe available. My daughter and grandchildren love it too.
