Vintage Recipe For Frosted Molasses CreamsThis vintage recipe was clipped from a newspaper and found in a large collection, date unknown. I’ve typed it below along with a scanned copy.

FROSTED MOLASSES CREAMS

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 beaten egg
1/2 cup light molasses
1/2 cup strong hot coffee infusion
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves

Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar; add egg and molasses. Mix well. Add coffee. Add sifted dry ingredients, beat until smooth. (Add 1/2 cup raisins if desired).

Pour into greased 9×13 inch pan. Bake in 350 degree oven 25 minutes.

While warm frost with thin powdered sugar frosting. Cool, cut in squares.

My family has used this same recipe for over 60 years and the only difference is that we also infuse strong, hot coffee to the powdered suger and margarine for the frosting. It takes only a couple of tablespoons of coffee.

My mom had this recipe from the 1960’s, we made it regularly. It’s a GREAT recipe!!!!!!

More festive with sprinkles and cut into diamonds( one way straight, one way slant cut). We skip the coffee in my family. The only cookie we still make at Christmas in my house. My adult son is the 3rd generation baker of this classic.

These are delicious! Even the Dairy/gluten I free version that I made for my sister, got rave reviews.
I have been trying to find this recipe since Mom’s 1940’s handwritten copy from my grandmother had disappeared from her Kitchen Secrets recipe journal. She made this regularly for us in the 50’s and 60’s.
